Flows and Industries — Map of Content

This MOC traces how energy enters, moves through, and leaves the reference territory and classifies the economic units behind those movements. It connects the main energy flows with transformation processes, energy industries, other producers, consumers, transport modes, and the cross-classification of energy uses and users (IRES Ch. V).

Each annotation describes what its linked page defines, distinguishes, traces, classifies, or maps. Start with a flow page when the question concerns how energy is recorded as it moves or is used; combine it with the relevant actor or cross-classification page when ownership, economic activity, or use purpose affects that treatment.

Flows

• Production - defines energy production, distinguishes primary extraction from secondary transformation output, and identifies how energy industries and other energy producers contribute
• Imports and Exports - defines imports and exports under the general trade system, treats re-imports and re-exports, and explains exclusions for transit goods, international bunkers, and nuclear fuels
• International Bunkers - defines international marine and aviation bunkers by voyage or flight territory, separates them from trade flows, and distinguishes domestic and military fuel use
• Stock Changes - defines energy stocks and calculates stock builds and draws, explains product and interproduct transfers, and relates both devices to energy-balance reconciliation
• Transformation - defines the transfer of energy content between products, distinguishes physical or chemical conversion from aggregation and blending, catalogues transformation plants, and connects the process with secondary production and energy balances
• Losses - defines transmission, distribution, and transport losses, includes manufactured-gas venting and flaring, geothermal losses, and pilferage, and distinguishes venting or flaring recorded within production
• Energy Industries Own Use - defines direct-support consumption by energy industries and other energy producers, excludes transformation and non-core use, and locates EIOU within the uses-and-users matrix
• Non-Energy Use - defines raw-material and other non-fuel uses of energy products, distinguishes them from transformation and energy use, and explains the reductants exception and cross-user treatment
• Final Consumption - defines final consumption as energy and non-energy deliveries outside transformation, separates its two components, and distinguishes consumer use from energy-industries own use

Concepts

• Energy Industries - defines energy industries by principal activity, applies the SNA activity distinctions in Box 5.1, maps the Table 5.1 industries to ISIC, and explains each industry and plant category
• Electricity and Heat Production - distinguishes main producers from autoproducers and generating-plant types, separates generation-support EIOU from principal-activity consumption, and defines generation sources and technologies
• Other Energy Producers - defines units whose energy activity is secondary or ancillary rather than principal, illustrates the category with industry and household examples, and explains its data-collection recommendation
