Energy Industries Own Use (EIOU)

Energy industries own use refers to the consumption of fuels and energy for the direct support of the production and preparation for use of fuels and energy, except heat not sold [IRES, Ch. V, para. 5.20, PDF p. 71, 2018].

It is one of the flow terms IRES names explicitly as part of the “energy flow” concept, alongside production, import, export, bunkering, stock changes, transformation and final consumption [IRES, Ch. V, para. 5.2, PDF p. 68, 2018].

EIOU covers not only own use by energy industries proper (IRES, Ch. V, para. 5.23) but also own use by other energy producers — economic units for which energy production is a secondary or ancillary activity [IRES, Ch. V, para. 5.20, PDF p. 71, 2018].

What EIOU excludes

Two categories of energy use are explicitly carved out of EIOU:

• Quantities of fuels transformed into other fuels or energy are not EIOU — they belong to Transformation instead.
• Quantities used within parts of the energy industry not directly involved in production/preparation-for-use activities are not EIOU either — these are reported within final consumption.

EIOU in the cross-classification of uses and users

In Figure 5.2’s matrix of energy uses and users, EIOU is represented by box (b). As above, it does not cover the use of energy products for transport or non-energy purposes by the energy industries. It also covers own use in energy production by other energy producers — economic units that produce energy products but are not part of the energy industries based on their principal activity [IRES, Ch.
