Oil Shale/Oil Sands
defines SIEC section 2 as raw sedimentary rock and distinguishes it from extracted oils, which SIEC classifies under other hydrocarbons
Oil Shale/Oil Sands
SIEC section 2 (not further disaggregated into divisions, groups or classes below the section level). One of the ten top-level sections of the Standard International Energy Product Classification (SIEC); see that page for the classification’s scope rules, coding system and full Table 3.1 code list.
2 / 20 / 200 / 2000 Oil shale/oil sands
A sedimentary rock that contains organic matter in the form of kerogen — a waxy hydrocarbon-rich material regarded as a precursor of petroleum [IRES, Ch. III, SIEC 2000, PDF p. 43, 2018].
Remark: Oil shale may be burned directly or processed by heating to extract shale oil. While oil shale itself is classified here, the oils extracted from oil shale and oil sands are included in SIEC division 45, Other hydrocarbons [IRES, Ch. III, SIEC 2000, PDF p. 43, 2018].
