Scope note: IRES’s back matter (PDF pp. 158–168) comprises Annex A (primary/secondary and renewable/non-renewable status of SIEC headings), Annex B (conversion factors, calorific values and measurement unit tables) and a References section. This digest covers the full annexes (A, B, References) — Pass 2 of 2 completes coverage of Annex B (PDF pp. 162–164) and References (PDF pp. 166–168).
Annex A. Primary and secondary products; renewables and non-renewables (PDF pp. 158–161)
Energy statistics conventionally distinguishes between primary and secondary energy products, and between renewable and non-renewable products (full definitions in Chapter II); Annex A provides the cross-classification of these categories and the full list of SIEC headings assigned to them [IRES, Annex A, PDF p. 158, 2018].

- Cross-classification grid. A 2×2 grid (primary/secondary × renewable/non-renewable) lists SIEC groups by name in each cell — e.g. hard coal, brown coal and peat as non-renewable primary products; coal products and oil products as non-renewable secondary products; biofuels (except charcoal) as renewable primary products; charcoal and electricity/heat from combusted biofuels as renewable secondary products [IRES, Annex A, PDF p. 158, 2018].
- Municipal waste’s split status: the biomass-origin part of municipal waste is treated as renewable, the fossil-origin part as non-renewable (footnote 89) [IRES, Annex A, footnote 89, PDF p. 158, 2018].
- Renewable electricity/heat sources (footnote 90): renewable electricity sources are hydro, wind, solar (photovoltaic and solar thermal), geothermal, wave, tide and other marine energy, plus combustion of biofuels; renewable heat sources are solar thermal, geothermal and combustion of biofuels [IRES, Annex A, footnote 90, PDF p. 158, 2018].
- Full status table. A table assigns Primary (P)/Secondary (S) and Renewable (R)/Non-renewable (NR) status to every SIEC heading across sections 0–9 (113 rows total, spanning PDF pp. 158–161 with three “continued” pages) [IRES, Annex A, PDF pp. 158–161, 2018]. Several cells are genuinely blank in the source — the whole-section aggregates Oil (§4), Electricity (§7), Heat (§8) and Nuclear fuels and other fuels n.e.c. (§9), plus a few subordinate headings — because para 3.16 (Ch. III) notes these distinctions are not explicit SIEC classification criteria and IRES does not universally assign them.
- Indicative status. At the time of publication no internationally agreed definition of renewable/non-renewable products was available, so the list is indicative and subject to amendment [IRES, Annex A, PDF p. 158, 2018].
Annex B. Additional tables on conversion factors, calorific values and measurement units (PDF pp. 162–164)
Annex B collects eight numeric reference tables that back the unit and calorific-value discussion of Chapter IV; all eight are sourced to United Nations (1987), Energy Statistics: Definitions, Units of Measure and Conversion Factors, Statistical Papers, Series F, No. 44 [IRES, Annex B, PDF pp. 162–164, 2018]. Each table has been folded into the concept page where it is used, rather than reproduced a second time here:
- Table 1 (mass equivalents), Table 2 (volume equivalents) and Table 3 (energy equivalents) — full FROM/INTO conversion grids among kilograms/metric tons/long tons/short tons/pounds; U.S./Imperial gallons/ barrels/cubic feet/litres/cubic metres; and TJ/million Btu/GCal/GWh/ktoe/ ktce respectively — on measurement-units § Mass, Volume and Energy units [IRES, Annex B, Tables 1–3, PDF p. 162, 2018].
- Table 4 (gross-vs-net calorific-value difference by fuel), a percentage-difference table spanning coke, coals, oil, gas and biomass fuels, on calorific-values § Gross and net calorific values [IRES, Annex B, Table 4, PDF p. 163, 2018].
